writing prompt: ten years ago...

ten years ago the secret to life was in norm's virgin strawberry margarita's. i would have been wearing stretchy black pants and had jessie's borrowed snowflake sweater tied around my waist. i'd be sitting on a stool at the front desk of the golden gate restaurant in kennewick-town. bad eighties karaoke going on in the background. my car was a speedy silver honda prelude that smelled like mongolian beef from going on delivery runs for $5.25 an hour. i probably had a belly full of stale fortune cookies and leftover egg rolls.

jess and i would watch the clock for our shift to end, share one of norm's margarita's, count up our tips and collect the days fortunes. gross drunk old men would be trying to impress us with their skills at "the claw" and we'd anxiously wait around for lacie to show up with instuctions on how-this-night-was-going-to-go-down.

now it's your turn...

  1. ...you were probably hanging out with my brother, and I was totally unaware that my brother had such a cool friend.

I was being a busy mom to Madeline and Jocelyn and husband to Brandon. Lots of good memories.

  3. damn, i love this kind of thing... i was going to do a post about it but then realized that 10 years ago i was doing nothing of interest - freezing my ass off in canada, falling out of love with someone, working at my first, lame design job, listening to a lot of brit pop...

  4. This is fun. Ok 10 years ago right now I would be in college just finishing up woodworking studio for the day, heading back to my apartment in my white jetta (loved that car so so much). I would've been smoking some cigs (naughty girl!) and make myself a dinner with ramin noodles without the seasoning but instead adding ricotta cheese. Sigh. Thanks for that reminder!

  5. Wow. Sounds way better than what I was doing. I was laying on the couch pregnant with IV's in my arm for months. I was absolutely useless. I crawled to the bathroom. I had a 1/2 hr. eating time slot. It was at 2 am. I could only maybe eat a half of piece of bread. But my darling Mattie was so worth it.

  6. ...hmmm...my best guess at what i was doing...drinking top shelf margaritas at chili's with JR...getting ready to fall in love with canyonlands and southern utah...working, driving my cute little toyota paseo(i miss it), going to park city on the weekends, and probably being flakey and irresponsible. ahhhh

  7. the "babies" were 8, 10 and 12, linny nearly grown and jeff and sweet amelia were newlywed. I had just packed up my pre-school life and was fully immersed in doula work. baby baridi bunny was 4 months old and i was helping his mom practice driving so she could get a license. my day started at 6 with a chilly morning walk/talk with dearest friend tanya - we rarely missed. if my favorite clothes were clean, i'd be wearing my linen, flax brand jumper, small brown/black checked with a black t-shirt, tights and those rare birks that had a closed toe, wide strap and a big buckle clasp. we were driving "vannie" (all of our cars had names), the gray merc villager and life was truly good.

  8. The smell is coming back to me Lin....stale smoke, won ton broth, and dirty carpet. Nice. I've been grinning about this all week. I still can't believe you remembered Norm's name! I had forgotten about him and his night life. What a funny funny place that was. Can I puuhlease have a #8 with Mongolian Beef?
